This system is intended to simulate, on some level, birth-through-UPC. Many of the characteristics of birth no one has any control over - this system allows those "out of your control" characteristics to be all rolled into one "act of birth". Every UPC will generate a different character, but players can test several UPCs before bringing their chosen UPC to the game for character creation. No more simply trusting the player when they roll, or waiting for the first session to make characters. Let 'em make their character before the game starts. You don't need to witness any rolls - simply have them bring in their UPC and you'll know all their starting info. Don't want to force them to use the race, gender, whatever? Then don't - just use the parts of the generation you want (though for a good roleplaying challenge, I think you should make them keep it all, if they're up to it!)

Both methods (3d6 & 4d6) roll the same dice - the 4d6 method simply rolls one more. You should get similar stats regardless of method, though you'll have one more die to roll the stat with using the 4d6 method.

Race is determined by a random child in an integrated city with humans being the dominant race (see table 4-46, page 140 in the DMG).

What is the campaign code?
The campaign code is a number supplied by your DM to identify the characters you're creating. If this is used, the characters created using the barcodes will all be unique to the campaign code. Using this, then, you can't find that killer barcode until your DM has chosen a number and given it out, since your killer barcode in one campaign may be the town drunk in another.
